Curriculum Review: Health in Christian Perspective by Abeka

Are you looking for a comprehensive curriculum that will give your high school student a solid foundation for understanding how to develop a healthy body, maintain personal health, administer first aid, prevent diseases, etc.? If your answer is yes, then Health in Christian Perspective may be a good option for you.

Let us look more in depth into this curriculum.

Who is Health in Christian Perspective for?

Health in Christian Perspective is a Christian-based curriculum designed for high school students. It is a one-semester course that is a part of Abeka’s Science & Health Series and runs parallel with Science: Matter and Energy in 9th grade. However, it is simple enough to be taken in 8th grade or even pushed forward to 10th grade.

How Is Health in Christian Perspective Structured?

  • There are 8 chapters divided into 2-5 sections. Each chapter consists of about 25-50 pages.
  • Each chapter incorporates Special Features about medical careers, Biblical discernment, etc.
  • Atlas of Human Anatomy can be found in the Appendix.
  • Each section ends with a Section Review, which provides enough questions to summarize each particular section.
  • At the end of each chapter, you will find a complete review as a preparation for a test.
  • Quizzes and tests throughout the course provide a feedback on how well your student learned the terminology and understands the concepts.

What Materials Do You Need for This Curriculum?

Unless you are teaching this curriculum with other families where you can share resources, you will need the following:

  • Health in Christian Perspective Student Kit (Textbook and Quizzes/Tests)
  • Health in Christian Perspective Parent Kit (Answer Key and Quiz/Test Key)

What Did We Like About Health in Christian Perspective?

There are three main “likes” that I would like to point out:

  1. The text is simple to follow, not overwhelming, and easy to understand.
  2. It includes many graphics and charts which bring the subject to life.
  3. It is a “light” curriculum and does not take much time to accomplish. Therefore, it complements rigorous curricula like science and math well.

What Did We NOT Like About Health in Christian Perspective?

  1. The curriculum is very traditional “classroom” style. Even though we use a number of this type of curricula in our homeschool, looking back, we would have preferred more engaging style for this particular subject.
  2. The text materials as well as tests are very heavy on terminology and definitions.

Would We Recommend Health in Christian Perspective?

If you are looking for an easy-to-read health curriculum that does not take much time to complete, then Health in Christian Perspective by Abeka may be a viable option for you. You have to be ready to deal with a traditional class approach to this subject though.

In Summary

Health in Christian Perspective was a suitable option for us in our homeschool environment. My son gained the structured health knowledge we were aiming at and will remember many things for the rest of his life. Looking back, however, we would have chosen a more engaging and less traditional classroom style curriculum.
