American Literature by BJU Press is a comprehensive and engaging survey of American literary works from colonial times to the present day. This textbook is designed for high school students and offers a thorough exploration of American literary history, including an analysis of various literary movements, genres, and themes. It is written from a Christian worldview perspective.

Textbook Overview:

  • The book begins with an overview of Native American literature and the colonial period, examining the works of important figures such as William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson. It then moves on to the revolutionary and early national periods, covering authors such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, and Phillis Wheatley.
  • The textbook also delves into the Romantic period, examining the works of writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville. Additionally, the book explores the impact of the Civil War on American literature and the emergence of the Realist movement in the late 19th century.
  • One of the strengths of this textbook is its inclusion of lesser-known works and authors. The book features a wide range of literary voices, providing a diverse and well-rounded perspective on American literature.
  • Throughout the text, the authors provide helpful historical and cultural context for each work, which helps readers better understand each piece.

How Did We Use American Literature by BJU Press?

My son took the American Literature course in 11th grade. Our objective was to work through the BJU Press curriculum, discuss the questions presented in the book orally, and then prepare for the American Literature CLEP Test.

If our goal was to take a CLEP exam, why did we use this high school curriculum?

  • American Literature by BJU Press is a very detailed and well-thought-out Christian curriculum with well built-in reviews.
  • It gives students enough material to understand the subject as well as plenty of reviews.
  • We appreciated the Christian perspective the curriculum offers as it helped my son to better understand the writings.
  • We found this to be an excellent foundation not only for preparing for the CLEP exam but also for acquiring knowledge that will be useful throughout our lives.

I have to admit that we didn’t make use of the tests offered with this curriculum. This was due to the numerous practice tests that my son covered in his CLEP preparation. However, if you are planning on using this curriculum for a high school class only, I would strongly suggest adding the tests.

American Literature personal note

In Conclusion:

Overall, American Literature by BJU Press is an excellent resource for high school students studying American literature from a Christian perspective. It provides a comprehensive overview of American literary history while also offering insights into the cultural and historical contexts that influenced each work. The book’s engaging style and thought-provoking discussion questions make it an ideal resource for both individual and classroom study, and the teacher’s edition provides valuable resources for educators teaching this course.

Additional Note:

During a discussion about my son’s British Literature curriculum for his 12th grade, I suggested he take a short CLEP course to save time for other subjects. However, my son enjoyed studying American Literature by BJU Press so much that he decided to use the same curriculum for his British Literature, even though it will add several months to his overall course of study.
