Catapults: Teaching Science the Fun Way

Do you like teaching science the fun way? This lesson, recommended for elementary grades, teaches children in a fun way about potential and kinetic energy as well as projectile motion. Originally, this lesson was taught in a coop setting with much success; however, it can also be done one-family style if preferred! 

What will you need?

  1. Catapults Science Lesson (see below)
  2. Catapults Teacher’s Instructions (see below)
  3. Popsicle sticks
  4. Rubber bands
  5. Plastic teaspoon
  6. Aluminum foil
  7. Ping pong balls
  8. Gummy bears

What will the children learn and do?

  • They will learn what catapults are, their history, variations and how they work.
  • They will understand about potential and kinetic energy; how potential energy is stored in an object, changed into kinetic energy and transferred to a launched object.
  • They will discover how a size of an angle determines whether the object flies higher or further.
  • They will learn how weight of an object impacts the flight distance.
  • They will create their own catapult and launch objects.
