2022 Poetry Month Challenge

This challenge is CLOSED; THANK YOU for your interest! View the challenge winner.

Do you teach poetry in your homeschool? I must admit I haven’t done very well with poetry as a homeschool teacher until my son reached high school. Of course, we did read mandatory poems and memorized a few but it was not until 9th grade that I realized we had missed some poetry fundamentals. [You can read about our poetry journey in Is Memorizing Poetry Good for the Brain?]

Years ago, I worked as an editor for a Christian children’s magazine called Keeping in Touch for KIDS. We would print many poems and number of them written by children themselves. For example, 9-year-old Josiah once wrote the following:

God Made

God made the sun, moon and stars,
He made planets, Earth, Jupiter, and Mars.

God made plants and animals,
Reptiles, flowers and birds.

God made the world in seven days
Just by saying a few words.

God made you and me,
Together we will live eternally.

God loves you and I,
He is your Father and mine.

As April is known as a National Poetry Month in the United States, we thought it would be fun to issue a challenge to your children and get them excited about poetry. (If you live outside of the United States and would still like to participate, please do not hesitate to sign up. We will be happy to have you!)
