Do you remember your school years and the English class in which you were presented a theme and told to write? At that moment your mind went blank and you panicked. After a while you penned down a few sentences and hated the thought of another class. Whether you were that type of a child or not, we all have experienced the writer’s block at one point in time or another. I trust remembering that helps us to have patience with our children as we teach them how to write.
Writing is an art that cannot be achieved without necessary tools. Even though terms like “creative writing” and “freely expressing yourself” sound like a thrilling intention, it is very difficult for a young mind, unless very gifted in the area of writing, to express ideas on paper for which they are missing basic information and tools. It is like sending them to dig a ditch without giving them instructions and a shovel so that they can achieve the goal.
What Is the Best Way to Teach Your Child to Write
There are many ways you can teach your child writing skills without shedding tears. It is simply by giving them the tools they need to start with. The method I like the most in the early elementary years is leading them to answer basic questions while using whole sentences. Not only will they be able to “know” what to write but it will also help them to form a pattern for their writing future of how to retrieve information from their minds. Questions that start with simple words like why, which, when, etc. are the most powerful basic tools that help a child think and bring out the knowledge that is already stored in their brain.
Turn Your Child’s Writing into a Book
In order to support you in teaching your child how to write, we have created a short book of prompts that will help them write confidently in complete sentences. At the same time they will be able to create their own book completed with their own art. They will also be able to present their accomplishments to their family and friends. We trust you will enjoy reading your child’s book even many years down the road.
