Homeschooling High School: Transcripts

You have determined to homeschool through high school, got everything well planned and now you have heard about transcripts. You may ask: What is a high school transcript? In short, a high school transcript is an official document that records your student’s academic accomplishments. This document is mainly needed when applying for college, but there have been situations where transcripts were required by employers, auto insurance companies, etc.

What Should a Homeschool Transcript Include?

Every transcript should be broken down into several categories:

1. Student and Homeschool Information

  1. Your homeschool name:
  2. Some states require your homeschool to have its own name, other states give you liberties to choose whether you name your school or not.
  3. Your homeschool address
  4. Your homeschool phone number
  5. Student’s name
  6. Student’s date of birth
  7. Graduation date

2. Course Information

  1. Course name
  2. Grade earned for each course
  3. Number of credits earned for each course
  4. GPA (per year and/or cumulative per the entire high school)
  5. Official test scores

3. Grading Scale

It is important for the future institutions to know what scale was used for grading your student so that they may have a comparison with other applicants. For more information on various types of grading scales, please see Homeschooling High School: How to Calculate Grades.

4. Volunteer hours, achievements, awards

5. Official signature and date

How to organize your student’s high school transcript?

There are two main ways you can think of your student’s transcript:

1. By subject

Has your student achieved good grades in all subjects? Organizing their transcript by subject makes it easy to see how many credits they gained in each area of their studies.

2. By grade

Has your student struggled in any of the area of their studies? As organizing their transcript by subject would highlight their area of weakness, it is recommended to separate their subjects by individual grades where their lower grades may be less noticeable.

No matter which way you decide to lay out your student’s transcript, make sure you keep updating it each year. This will help you reach graduation day with peace of mind and with everything important in place.
