This lesson, recommended for elementary grades, teaches children in a fun way about types of bridges, their construction, tension, compression, bending, force balances, and material selection. Originally, this lesson was taught in a co-op setting with much success; however, it can also be done in a home setting.

Lots of pennies for weights

What will the children learn and do?
They will learn about the different types of bridges in historical order from simple (beam and arch) to more complex (truss and suspension).
They will understand the advantages and limitations of each type of the bridge.
They will view actual bridges of the different types and identify them.
They will build their own bridge and learn how much weight it can withstand.
